Spider veins are a medical condition of the leg veins. Usually these are enlarged small and medium-sized veins located directly under the skin surface and therefore visible. Experience has taught us, that many perceive them as unsightly.
Spider veins mostly occur due to inherited weak vein walls; a condition aggravated further by other external influences such as pregnancies or professions involving long hours of standing. Unfortunately not only the small, superficial leg veins (spider veins) are affected by this condition, but sometimes the deeper leg veins (varicose veins) too. Varicose veins are not only a cosmetic problem, but represent a real health issue in a later stage.
First, you should get a color duplex venous ultrasound exam to exclude any serious vein problems. We will, of course, discuss this and an appropriate course of action with you on our first consultation at PKLP Aesthetics – Center for Aesthetic Surgery.
The laser light damages the blood vessel walls. The blood in the vessels coagulate and the vessel wall collapses impeding the blood flow. The body then modifies and breaks the blood vessel down. This processes takes from one to six months.
Laser energy penetrates the skin, but usually does not damage it. When it passes through the skin, heat is generated that might hurt the skin. It is, therefore, recommended to cool the treated skin afterwards to thoroughly soothe the irritated skin and redness of the treated skin areas.
As a rule, several sessions of 4 to 8 weeks apart are needed.
The treatment does not address the causes why blood vessels turn into spider veins. If you have a genetic disposition to develop them, they might come back, but you can always get them treated.
The treatment on the legs lasts from approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.
To avoid damage to the treated skin, do not expose them to direct sunlight 2 weeks before and after the treatment.
Compression stockings will be fitted after the treatment, allowing the treated skin areas to heal faster and better.
After the treatment, light reddening might occur for approximately 48 hours, which can be treated easily by applying some light cooling.
