Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a medical term originating from the Greek meaning “women-like breasts” in men. Even though this condition is rarely talked about, it is pretty common. Approximately 40-60 % of all men suffer from gynecomastia. Although certain medication or medical problems can cause an overdevelopment, in most cases the cause is unknown. If you feel troubled by or insecure due to enlarged breasts, aesthetic surgery can help you.

Procedure

An increase in fatty tissue over the breast area without a hyperplasia of the mammary glands is very common. In this case, we can re-shape the male breasts using liposuction.

Preparations start with the special tumescent anesthesia, which involves injecting a highly diluted anesthetic solution evenly into the fatty tissue. The fatty tissue is then removed using a very thin suction cannula. With liposuction we can reduce the fat layer considerably, some fat cells have to remain in the area to avoid irregularities. The amount depends on your individual body shape. If necessary, the excess mammary gland tissue can be removed using a small surgical incision between the areola and the skin. Generally, the connective tissue, nerves and blood vessels will remain undamaged during this treatment.

If you have excess skin, it might be necessary to simultaneously firm up the area surgically. In this case, we will lift the nipple, reduce the skin and close the wound using fine sutures.

Recovery and Follow-up Treatment

Typically, you will be able to go about your business as usual after a few days. Haematomas (bruises) might occur and will vanish after one to two weeks without impeding your day-to-day life. After the surgery you will experience sensations similar to muscle soreness lasting a few days. The external healing process will be generally completed within four weeks, the internal one might take up to six months. After the surgery we will fit you with a compression garment, which you should wear for several weeks.
